Laundry Room Refresh

The one room I need to have looking nice in my house is my laundry room. Why? Because there is even less of a chance of me doing laundry in a grungy looking room! I need all the help I can get there, so I went to work.

I was newly pregnant with my second son at the time, so pictures are few and far between, sorry. My laundry room is in the basement, it was a beige color called "Breadstick" and had no decor. I started with the number one way to change a room - paint! I painted everything White Dove by BM, and already the room was looking so much better!

My laundry room is about 10 inches wider than my washer and dryer, and I also needed a place to put all of my laundry items. I didn't want them out in the open, but I also wanted to be able to access them easily. The best solution I came up with was a rolling cart between my washer and dryer. I built it out of a 1x10, 1x2, and a piece of scrap 3/4 inch plywood that the previous owner had left behind. We all love free supplies!

I cut the 1x10 into three pieces, 30", 30", and 22.25". Both 30" pieces were the front and back, and the last piece was the top. I cut the plywood for the bottom and a shelf in the middle, and used 1x2s for railings to keep all of my supplies in the cart. I connected everything with the pocket hole screws and wood glue, then bought some wheels from Amazon to finish is off! The sides and railings got painted black, the top got stained and poly-ed, and the shelves got contact paper to make them easy to wipe down. Here is a photo for a little more explanation (pre contact paper):

After building the cart to hold all of my laundry supplies, I was already feeling a lot better about the space. It was brighter and more functional!

However, I was going for a little bit more than that. I needed to LOVE this space and actually want to do laundry in here! I had also been dreaming of a painting a wall mural for some time, so that was next on the agenda. First, I sketched the design, then I had to choose my color scheme. I always use Benjamin Moore paints because, well, they're the best! I already had white on my walls, and I wanted to incorporate Blacktop, since that is on two walls in the rest of my basement. I have a true tan color I've used multiple times and loved, so the third color would be Baby Fawn. Now for the "something fun" color. After looking at a bunch of different colors, I finally landed on Cappuccino! My color scheme looked like this:

I thought the mural would be the most exciting part, but since no walls are perfectly straight or level, it took me a good hour and a half to trace two straight, level lines. However, after that was finished and the painting began, I had so much fun. First an arch, then a little color blocking, and to finish it off, a six foot flower!

After some home decor shopping and styling, here is the final result!

Thank you for stopping by!
